1) What is pgnRead?
   ----------------

pgnRead is a high quality, FREE, fully functional chess games reader for
Windows 3.1 or higher. It can move through each game on move by move basis,
reverse the board, jump to middle game, end game, next game in file, etc,
using the keyboard or the mouse. It can be used to view games with a Web
browser, and has the ability to list notation errors in game files.

pgnRead requires games in PGN notation, popularized on Internet.
PGN, or Portable Game Notation, is a non-proprietary text-based format
for representing chess games. An example of a game in PGN notation follows:

[Event "Hastings International Congress"]
[Site "Hastings"]
[Date "1922.??.??"]
[Round "06"]
[White "Alekhine,A"]
[Black "Rubinstein,A"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 c5 3. c4 e6 4. cxd5 exd5 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. dxc5 d4 7. Na4 Bxc5 8.
Nxc5 Qa5+ 9. Qd2 Qxc5 10. e3 dxe3 11. Qxe3+ Qxe3+ 12. Bxe3 Nge7 13. Bb5 O-O 14.
O-O Be6 15. Nd4 { Playing for a draw } Nxd4 16. Bxd4 Nc6 17. Bxc6 bxc6 1/2-1/2

Note that comments can be inserted into PGN games inside {..}'s.
pgnRead will display any such comments at the appropriate move.

2) Important things
   ----------------

pgnRead 1.51 may be freely distributed. Please distribute this
file, pgnRd151.txt along with the executable file.

I have received several complaints about how awkward pgnRead is to
use with a mouse. pgnRead has a keyboard interface which is nicer and
is described under Help in the program.

3) Revision history (starting at version 1.50)
   -------------------------------------------

3a) What's new with 1.50?

For those of you using pgnRead with a WWW browser, we now have a
File | Save As.. command, which will allow you to store the pgn file
you are viewing for off-line use. This command will only work as long as
you are connected to the browser. Internally, this command works by
copying the temporary file the browser creates, not by storing the contents of pgnRead's memory.

pgnRead can now hold up to 7000 games.

There is a new keyboard command, "T" that will take you to the top
of the current game.

3b) What's new with 1.51?

pgnRead now displays the name of the currenly loaded file at the top of the screen.
Also it now handles two rarely-used pgn features, namely numeric annotated
glyphs and recursive annotation variations.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you enjoy using pgnRead!
